Savannah is a feast for the eyes. We love old buildings and architecture, so today ranks as one of the most enjoyable days we have ever spent on vacation. Savannah has an incredible collection of beautiful old buildings, huge trees draped with Spanish Moss, and lovely flowers, plants, and gardens. When you put all of this together, it is truly stunning. We live just a few hours away, but we had never seen Savannah until today. This is our Daily Journal for Round America Day 2 - April 2, 2003. From beautifully-preserved Savannah, we traveled down two-lane roads with skeletons of businesses put under by the Interstate highways.
We expected a let-down today after such a special day in Savannah yesterday. We got it. This is the Daily Journal of the trip Round America - Day 3 - April 3 2003. Click here for more information |

We were determined to make today a better one! We got off to an early start as it was going to take us a good while just to get back to Saint Augustine after our hotel-hunting-odyssey. This is our Daily Journal for Round America Day 4 - April 4, 2003. Click here for more information |

An eclectic bar, a bald star, hanging chads, rich people's pads, 60 rag tops, and the ultimate rag -- The National Enquirer. The joy of the unexpected! We had a great time today - mainly because we so enjoyed a number of things that we just stumbled upon. Accidental tourists! This is our Daily Journal for Round America Day 5 - April 5, 2003. The Miami area is much prettier than we expected, and it was big and busy. It was also very clean -- not the picture I had of it in my mind's eye. I hadn't been in Miami as a tourist since I was a child. This is our Daily Journal for Round America Day 6 - April 6, 2003. Click here for more information |

The drive from Miami to Key West was enjoyable - not nearly as long as we thought it would be. Our timing was lucky, however, as the weekends are much busier. We hit a car wash to get a week's worth of dirt blasted off the little white car, and we finally found a really nice American flag license plate at Discount Auto Parts. So we were standing tall as we began our search for Jimmy Buffett. It's about 150 miles from Miami to Key West. This is our Daily Journal for Round America Day 7 - April 7, 2003. Sunny, beautiful blue sky, and 82 degrees. We have enjoyed fabulous weather! In eight days, we saw only two or three raindrops late one afternoon in Miami. The sky was SO BLUE today that I took a photo of it just to be able to remember. We thoroughly enjoyed Key West today. Second best day so far (still rank Day 2 in Savannah as the best). This is our Daily Journal for Round America Day 8 - April 8, 2003. Click here for more information |

Today was an "off day" - basically a travel day. "All" we saw were three world's largest; two world's smallest; highways with warning signs for crocodiles, panthers, and endangered deer; roadside gorillas (2), a fish, a camel, and a panther; the African Queen in Key Largo; two world capitals; the Everglades; suspected Weapons of Mass Destruction, and a wide variety of funky mailboxes. It was a Quirky day! This is our Daily Journal for Round America Day 9 - April 9, 2003. Click here for more information |
|
Today should have been two days. I simply scheduled too many miles to be covered in one day. It took us five hours to go the first 100 miles. It seemed like stoplights were every few feet along Highway 41 from Fort Myers to Tampa, and the traffic was terrible. I will look again at the remainder of the schedule and see where I need to add a day here and there. We had some fun today, but we couldn't see as much as we would have liked. This is our Daily Journal for Round America Day 10 - April 10, 2003. Click here for more information |

Today was Melissa Keeney Day! Melissa was introduced to us yesterday by my brother, Tony. Melissa is a client of Tony's company, News Directions, and she is the top reporter at NBC Channel 7 in Panama City. Melissa expressed interest in doing a news story about our trip Round America as we stopped in Panama City to see the sights. This is our Daily Journal for Round America Day 11 - April 11, 2003. We slept later than usual today as we have just 80 miles or so to our next stop, New Orleans. Sunny and 70 degrees with a blue sky with light cirrus clouds. After two days of cool weather and the top up, we looked forward to getting the top down and soaking some rays. This is our Daily Journal for Round America Day 12 - April 12, 2003. Click here for more information |
|
We had absolutely nothing planned for today except to drive from New Orleans to Houston and do the wash. Other than one nature trail scenic drive area in Louisiana, the page was clean. Southern Louisiana isn't very pretty, and there wasn't a lot to see, but today was more like the "Pie Trip" as we originally envisioned it. We just drove from small town to small town, so we enjoyed the heck out of it. This is our Daily Journal for Round America Day 13 - April 13, 2003. Click here for more information |

I love Texas, especially small-town Texas. So, I decided to change the itinerary. I added a few days between Houston and San Diego. I split today's itinerary in two; I planned to go to Corpus Christi tonight and then on to McAllen on Tuesday. This was done to allow the time to drive to small towns and really see them rather than just breezing past them on the road through town. This is our Daily Journal for Round America Day 14 - April 14, 2003. Click here for more information |
|
Texas is massive. There is one ranch in Texas that is bigger than the state of Rhode Island. The distance from Houston to El Paso is greater than the distance from El Paso to Cheyenne, Wyoming. There are at least 294,833 miles of roads in Texas! This is our Daily Journal for Round America Day 15 - April 15, 2003. Click here for more information |

What an enjoyable day! I met some great people. I visited Havana, Rome, and Mexico. I almost rode on a ferry. I ate Mexican food only, and I ate at places where they only spoke Spanish. I visited the birthplace of the greatest pro football coach ever. I had my first snow cone as an adult. I enjoyed a lovely war memorial and several patriotic displays. I saw the world's largest killer bee, a baboon, an orange car on a statue in the middle of a field, and the world's only drive-thru store built as a giant six pack of Pepsi Cola. I saw the Rio Grande River from several vantage points. I saw great, old architecture and spent much of the day on a movie set -- part of the time literally and part of the time figuratively. I enjoyed a number of beautiful sunsets as I raced west (at the speed limit). This is our Daily Journal for Round America Day 16 - April 16, 2003. Click here for more information |
|
It was a dusty day in South Texas. I don't know if it's always like this, but the day began and ended ugly. The sun never cut through the dust. This is our Daily Journal for Round America Day 17 - April 17, 2003. Click here for more information |

Big Bend is incredibly beautiful (even on an overcast day), and it is the ultimate sunset spot, as you can drive from location to location while the sun is setting and see a variety of spectacular sights from heights that provide the ideal view. This is our Daily Journal for Round America Day 18 - April 18, 2003. Click here for more information |
|
Despite my eye injury, I got up and out before the sun came up as I wanted to see the sunrise at Big Bend. I hiked a ways off the road to an area that Yvette, the bartender / waitress from last night, told me would be the best spot. I sat on a rock in the cool morning air and saw a beautiful sunrise out of my right eye. I got several excellent photos, even though I am now having to modify my photographic efforts as I have always been a left eye shooter. I'll be doing right eye work for a few days. This is our Daily Journal for Round America Day 19 - April 19, 2003. Click here for more information |

Every day has been an adventure. Some more than others. Today was heavy on adventure. I went on an Easter Egg hunt of sorts. I didn't stop to appreciate that today was Easter Sunday until it was too late. This is our Daily Journal for Round America Day 20 - April 20, 2003. Click here for more information |
|
I only sleep five or six hours a night, so I was up and away from the Best Western at 7:15 am. Sunny and clear. Tyler was still at the front desk, and I met Chuck. He told me a little about Truth or Consequences. He likes the name okay. It was the only reason I was there. I had to visit a town that changed its name to that of a popular radio and then TV program back in the 50's. This is our Daily Journal for Round America Day 21 - April 21, 2003. There is a lot to see in Tucson, but I didn't see it. My apologies to Tucson. This is our Daily Journal for Round America Day 22 - April 22, 2003. Click here for more information |

A quiet day. I didn't do a lot, and I didn't meet many people. The morning was spent at the hotel -- resting my eye and writing. The work by Dr. Miller and the medication are definitely helping as my eye feels much better. This is our Daily Journal for Round America Day 23 - April 23, 2003. Click here for more information |

The day was spent making the LONG drive from Tucson to San Diego, but cactus, a surprise find in Eloy, Dateland's famous Date Milkshake, Yuma, and the Center of the World in Felicity still made for an interesting "travel day." But the big news of the day is that Barbara Jane Gray Windsor, better known as Boz, Bozzie, or Bozzie Jane, has returned from granddaughter Madison duties in Atlanta. Mighty nice to have her back. This is a two-person deal for sure! I drove close to 500 miles today -- from Tucson to San Diego. This is our Daily Journal for Round America Day 24 - April 24, 2003. Click here for more information |
|
If you've been to San Diego, you know. If you haven't been, you have undoubtedly heard how beautiful it is. Well, it's even more beautiful than that! The sky and water are always azure blue. Most of the buildings seem to be crisp white. And the trees and plants and flowers combine a beautiful green with the other colors of the rainbow. An important part of the beauty is due to the lush vegetation here; it must be the perfect climate and soil for making every tree and plant look healthy and beautiful. This is our Daily Journal for Round America Day 25 - April 25, 2003. Click here for more information |
|
We bid a fond farewell to San Diego early as we have sights to see before a reunion with family in Rancho Palos Verdes. This is our Daily Journal for Round America Day 26 - April 26, 2003. Click here for more information |

Driving. That seems to be the main thing people in the greater Los Angeles area do. We spent the night in Anaheim -- waved at Disneyland as we passed by -- and drove to Long Beach. Long Beach is the largest of the "suburbs" of Los Angeles. I worked on a project there for six months in 1984, and my Dad went to high school and college in Long Beach. This is our Daily Journal for Round America Day 27 - April 27, 2003. Click here for more information |
|
Los Angeles is not as pretty as San Diego, but I was pleasantly surprised when I looked out the window of our Santa Monica hotel this morning. Blue sky rather than the whitish smog-filled sky that I have seen here on many other trips. When I worked on a consulting project in the LA area once, it rained after a week or two on the job, and when I looked out the next morning, I first realized there were mountains. This is our Daily Journal for Round America Day 28 - April 28, 2003. Click here for more information |

Armed with a special set of Route 66 maps for each Route 66 state, a regular map of each state, two books about Route 66, and the master notebook that I prepared of my research, Bozzie has her work cut out for her. Some long unbroken stretches of the Route still remain, but the Ghost Town Press map put it this way: "Route 66 today is essentially a discontinuous by-way, a wild mix of original roadbed, overlapping upgrades, Interstate service roads, and abandoned remnants. It has been chopped up, re-configured, and paved over in so many places so many times that trying to find it can often involve more work than fun." This is our Daily Journal for Round America Day 29 - April 29, 2003. Click here for more information |
|
We extended our stay in Williams, Arizona so we could ride the Grand Canyon Railroad from Williams to the Grand Canyon and back. The railroad kept the town of Williams alive after Interstate 40 took the cars away from Route 66, so it was very important to us to support the railroad. We were out the door bright and early today -- 7:29 am to be precise. We were anxious to get to beautiful Sedona. We met the Ingrams from Canton, Georgia as we checked out; they were vacationing with a big group of Georgia folks. This is our Daily Journal for Round America Day 32 - May 2, 2003. Click here for more information |

36,326 on the odometer as we left Sedona with Gallup, New Mexico as our final destination. Today will be a Route 66 day. There are 49 Route 66 exits marked on our map between Flagstaff and Gallup. This is our Daily Journal for Round America Day 33 - May 3, 2003. Click here for more information |
|
Gallup is filled with old motels with great neon signs. We thought we saw them last night, but we only saw part of Route 66. This morning, we've seen far more. I'm sorry I didn't get these photographed after dark so we could capture the great neon. This is our Daily Journal for Round America Day 34 - May 4, 2003. Click here for more information |
|
Santa Fe, New Mexico is certainly a beautiful place. The sky and the clouds here have a beauty unlike I have seen elsewhere. I assume the sky always looks the way it has during our two-day visit. This is our Daily Journal for Round America Day 35 - May 5, 2003. Click here for more information |

Week 6 begins. This is Day 36. 36,993 on the odometer. 8,957 miles so far. Leaving Albuquerque. Back on Route 66. This is our Daily Journal for Round America Day 36 - May 6, 2003. Click here for more information |
|
Our day began at B&W Mailing Center where we shipped 44 pounds of accumulated brochures and books back to the Intergalactic Headquarters for the Round America Tour in Atlanta, Georgia. When we walked in, April and Jamie were in an admittedly rotten mood. Before long, we were telling stories, and they were rolling on the floor laughing. It's so nice to be able to brighten someone else's day! This is our Daily Journal for Round America Day 37 - May 7, 2003. Click here for more information |
|
Bozzie Jane's father has had what is being described as a mini-stroke, so I am taking her to the Lubbock International Airport for a flight to Dallas so she can be with him and help out. Her mom (Mimi) just had knee replacement surgery, so they can really use a helping hand right now. This is our Daily Journal for Round America Day 38 - May 8, 2003. Click here for more information |
|
I left the Marriott Courtyard in Oklahoma City bright and early as I had to backtrack. It was dark for way too many towns and things that I wanted to see for the last 100 miles or so. This is our Daily Journal for Round America Day 39 - May 9, 2003. Click here for more information |

Today was a four state day. I started in Tulsa, Oklahoma, and before the day was done, I had also been to Arkansas, Kansas, and Missouri. This is our Daily Journal for Round America Day 40 - May 10, 2003. Click here for more information |
|
I spent Mother's Day on the Mother Road. My last full day of Route 66, as I got off the Route in St. Louis. I visited Doolittle and Sleeper, traveled to Cuba, enjoyed Bourbon, drove the Devil's Elbow, and ended the day with family and friends in the St. Louis area. I was also "busted" for drugs today. This is our Daily Journal for Round America Day 41 - May 11, 2003. Click here for more information |

Ward, Doug, and I talked for a while this morning. Ward is married to Judy (Judy was the first of the four Gray children born in St. Louis and Bozzie Jane was the last). Ward is an especially neat guy, and it has been a pleasure to be around him at family get-togethers over the past 32 years. Doug was Papa Gray's business partner, and a sharper man you will never meet. Doug is a Pearl Harbor survivor, and he and Ruth make us look like pikers in the travel department. This is our Daily Journal for Round America Day 42 - May 12, 2003. Click here for more information |
|
Since I had been scheduled to make it to Memphis last night, I chose the interstate at 7:15 am. I wanted to get to Graceland. Today marks the start of Week 7. 39,521 on the odometer. That means 11,485 miles in the rearview mirror. This is our Daily Journal for Round America Day 43 - May 13, 2003. Click here for more information |

We have completed the first loop Round America. After over 12,289 miles, we were home in Atlanta. Bozzie Jane wasn't with me for the last eight days. Rain is no fun at all. Please tell Dolly Parton that I'll live without rainbows for a while, because the absence of rain makes sightseeing much better. It was raining when I arrived at the hotel in Lexington last night, and it's raining and ugly this morning. It was raining too hard this morning to do anything, so my day didn't get started until about 10:30. Due to the weather, I was indoors a lot, so I did a lot of eating. I had three (3) pieces of pie today. The Sansabelt Law of Physics will be working on my waist line if I don't get out to do some serious walking soon. This is our Daily Journal for Round America Day 59 May 29, 2003. Click here for more information |

The day began in Louisville at the very funky Lynn's Paradise Cafe. Lynn Winter opened Lynn's Paradise Cafe in 1991, creating a unique setting, to say the least. Lynn is an artist with an amazing eye and style all her own. This is our Daily Journal for Round America Day 60 - May 30, 2003. Click here for more information |
|
I had not one, not two, not three, not four, not five, not six, but seven pieces of pie today. I saw the gym where the movie Hoosiers was filmed, and I saw the world's largest bottle of catsup. I drove the National Road -- Highway 40 -- through Indiana and Illinois. It rained much of the day, so I didn't get out of the car much. I met really delightful people at the two restaurants I visited. I saw my first covered bridge of the trip, my second Madonna of the Trail, a big cross, and my 56th, 57th, 58th, 59th, 60th, 61st, and 62nd pieces of pie. This is our Daily Journal for Round America Day 61 - May 31, 2003. Click here for more information |

Today was a pretty uneventful day. It took me a lot longer to get out of the greater St. Louis area than I expected. In Alton, Illinois, I saw the life-sized statue of Robert Wadlow, the 8-foot 11-inch world's tallest man. I then rode on not one but two ferry boats as I crossed the Illinois and Mississippi Rivers from the long peninsula area that extends down toward St. Louis -- unusual area. I spent some time in Hannibal, Missouri seeing the Mark Twain sights. Iowa became the 18th state we've visited. I was also in Louisiana today -- Louisiana, Missouri. As always, I met a number of very nice people. This is our Daily Journal for Round America Day 62 - June 1, 2003. Click here for more information |
|
I saw the Bridges of Madison County, Iowa today, but the highlight of the day (and a highlight of the trip) was my tour of Boys Town in Omaha, Nebraska. One of the boys, Vu, gave me a wonderful tour. What a special place! I also enjoyed two delightful meals with especially nice ladies. I had pie for breakfast at Wes' Restaurant in Oskaloosa, Iowa, and I had a fabulous dinner at Misty's in Lincoln, Nebraska. This is our Daily Journal for Round America Day 63 - June 2, 2003. Click here for more information |
|
I had looked forward to seeing the World's Largest Ball of Twine more than any sight on the trip. I saw it today, and I loved it! I also visited the Geographical Center of the Continental United States, saw an amazing museum developed by the man who invented baggies, visited the National Roller Skating Museum and the Garden of Eden, and saw unique art and artists at a world class art gallery in the tiny town of Lucas, Kansas. Oh yes, there was also the Prairie Peace Park, a highway built out of a zillion recycled tires, a wide variety of bicycle sculptures, a husband and wife entombed in glass-topped coffins in a pyramid-shaped mausoleum in the yard of their home, the Geodetic Center of the Continental United States, a home with every wall and ceiling covered in shiny aluminum foil, and a space ship. It don't get much better than this! It was one of the most enjoyable days on the road. This is our Daily Journal for Round America Day 64 - June 3, 2003. Click here for more information |
|
The day began in Salina, Kansas and ended in Garden City, Kansas. It was an ugly day -- dark clouds all day and rain off and on. And it wasn't a very exciting day, though I did see the Kansas version of Rock City, Dorothy's house in Liberal (Wizard of Oz) Kansas, Pawnee Rock, Dodge City, the World's Largest Hand Dug Well, the World's Largest Pallasite Meteorite, Midway USA, and a great round barn. I found Earl in Bucklin, Kansas; he was just a name mentioned in a song. I had a delightful lunch and great pie at Granny's Kitchen in Great Bend. I passed on eating anything or drinking the water in a town named Montezuma. This is our Daily Journal for Round America Day 65 - June 4, 2003. Click here for more information |
|
I drove from Garden City, Kansas to Grand Junction, Colorado. Colorado is a beautiful state that we have visited a number of times. Unfortunately, the southern route I chose just didn't have a lot of sights to see other than the mountains. And when you are in the car all day, you don't meet many people. This is our Daily Journal for Round America Day 66 - June 5, 2003. Click here for more information |
|
I saw two National Parks today...driving from Grand Junction, Colorado to Salt Lake City, Utah. It was a pretty boring day. Two less-than-exciting days in a row. This was a first for the trip. This is our Daily Journal for Round America Day 67 - June 6, 2003. Click here for more information |
|
I drove from Salt Lake City to Las Vegas today. Boz will be rejoining the trip in Vegas after spending the last 10 days babysitting Miss Madison in Atlanta. I didn't expect to see much between Salt Lake and Vegas, so expectations were low, which often makes for a good day. This is our Daily Journal for Round America Day 68 - June 7, 2003. Bozzie Jane is back! I picked her up at the Las Vegas airport this morning. We drove around Las Vegas a while, walked around a while, had lunch at the Harley Davidson Cafe, then went to the Bellaggio to see "O" as a birthday gift to Boz from son Ryan. Thanks Ryan!!! This is our Daily Journal for Round America Day 69 - June 8, 2003. Click here for more information |

We spent the day in Las Vegas. Bozzie Jane was a little sick so we spent the morning at the Harmon Medical Clinic. She now has four prescriptions. We aren't sure how this will affect the trip; we'll take it as it comes. This is our Daily Journal for Round America Day 70 - June 9, 2003. Click here for more information |

Leaving Las Vegas. We drove to Los Angeles today -- went via Death Valley. When we stopped for gas in Shoshone (Death Valley), California (population 100), Anna at the gas station asked if we knew where we had gotten lost. We drove from Monrovia to Los Angeles and on to Buellton, California. We drove along the coast from Buellton, California to Big Sur. We took side trips to see the Danish community of Solvang and the James Dean Memorial in Cholame. We spent a wonderful day with son Ryan in San Francisco, California. In addition to an Internet business, Ryan owns a tour company (see www.alcatraz.us or), and we got the deluxe tour. We spent a wonderful day in the San Francisco area with son Ryan. Ryan took us to meet one of his friends, Richard Tuck. Among other things, Richard owns a circus. Before we knew what was happening, we were meeting the circus performers and enjoying a behind-the-scenes tour of Circus Chimera -- www.circuschimera.com. We then enjoyed a special performance of the circus. It was a special day, and Richard is a special person. This is our Daily Journal for Round America Day 75 - June 14, 2003. We spent a wonderful Father's Day with son Ryan in Carmel, Monterey, and Santa Cruz, California. We had great conversations with PaPa in Dallas, Texas and Great Grandpa in Orlando, Florida. We also spoke with daughter Brittanita (aka The Beetmeister or Brittany) and son-in-law Ace (aka Robert). This is our Daily Journal for Round America Day 76 - June 15, 2003. We extended our visit today with son Ryan in San Francisco. We decided to add a day in San Francisco to take care of various "housekeeping chores." I took the day to try to catch up on the web site photos. Boz and Ryan got the oil changed in the PT Cruiser, but we learned that we needed a minor brake repair, so we will have to get that done tomorrow. We extended our visit today with son Ryan in San Francisco. We spent the day helping Ryan with his exploding business. We were telephone tour reservation agents for the day. Our job was to handle the 350 calls that rang into voice mail while the lines were busy with other callers. This is our Daily Journal for Round America Day 79 - June 18, 2003. We are still in San Francisco. We got off to a late start today as I became sick last night after Beach Blanket Babylon. Bozzie Jane answered Alcatraz and Hollywood calls for Ryan this morning. It's never-ending; people call at all hours of the day and night. This is our Daily Journal for Round America Day 82 - June 21, 2003. Click here for more information |

San Francisco is an incredible city with extraordinary natural beauty. It is UNBELIEVABLE how many sights there are to see. There is no other area like this anywhere in the country in terms of opportunities for sightseeing, fun, and adventure. You could probably spend a year sightseeing and enjoying all that the Bay Area has to offer. Bozzie Jane and I both commented today that we saw far more of San Francisco in the last week than we saw in the year that we lived here. We understand better now why Ryan loves it so much here. Still in San Francisco. We helped Ryan with his work overload today. It was The House of Magic! for dinner with the amazing Richard Tuck. Richard is a friend of Ryan's. He owns a circus -- see Day 75. This is our Daily Journal for Round America Day 85 - June 24, 2003. Click here for more information |

Still in San Francisco. We helped Ryan with his work overload today. Alcatraz tickets are pretty well sold out for the next 10 days, so we were not sure what Ryan will do with the hundreds and hundreds of people who call everyday wanting tickets. The maximum capacity of the Alcatraz ferries is 4,200 a day, and it seems that two or three times that many want to go during the summertime. This is our Daily Journal for Round America Day 86 - June 25, 2003. Click here for more information |

Still in San Francisco. We helped Ryan with his work overload today. 94-degres today. It's NEVER this hot in San Francisco! Ryan and I took another tour of Alcatraz today. I took 150 photos, so we now have a very comprehensive "virtual tour" of Alcatraz. This is our Daily Journal for Round America Day 87 - June 26, 2003. Click here for more information |

Fortuna, California to Coos Bay, Oregon today -- traveling Highway 101 all the way through Oregon and into Washington. Today was Redwoods Day! This is our Daily Journal for Round America Day 89 - June 28, 2003. Click here for more information |

I didn't sleep too well last night. That's often the way it is for me when I HAVE to be somewhere early the next morning. I woke up several times to check the clock as I didn't want to be late for my 8:30 am meeting at the Fire Department. I was really excited about getting to see the famous Oregon Dunes in a dune buggy with the Fire Department Rescue Team! This is our Daily Journal for Round America Day 90 - June 29, 2003. Astoria, Oregon to Port Angeles, Washington today -- on Highway 101 almost the entire way. I saw a lot of trees today -- Washington is full of them. The welcome sign said: "Washington -- The Evergreen State." Good motto. This is our Daily Journal for Round America Day 92 - July 1, 2003. Click here for more information |

This was one of the least eventful days on the road thus far. Western Washington simply isn't an action-packed area. Mainly trees. Literally. There is little in this area but the big Olympic National Park, and about all it has is trees and more trees. The day's travels took me from the trees in Port Angeles to the trees in Tacoma, Washington -- beside the trees on Highway 101 most of the way. This is our Daily Journal for Round America Day 93 - July 2, 2003. Click here for more information |

Today was a writing day. I spent the day in Tacoma and Seattle just writing and working on the web site updates. I added photos to most of the days since June 27. This is our Daily Journal for Round America Day 94 - July 3, 2003. Click here for more information |

The Fourth of July in Anchorage, Alaska. State #26 on our trip. We flew Alaska Airlines from Seattle to Anchorage. It is 2,400 miles by car with not much to see but more trees, so we decided to fly when we planned the trip. We've now traveled by car, bus, trolley, boat, ferry, fire engine, train, and plane. This is our Daily Journal for Round America Day 95 - July 4, 2003. Click here for more information |

If you come to Alaska, pack your own lunches and dinners. We're not hard to please. In 96 days of travel, we have been critical about less than five places we've eaten. But in Alaska, we have struck out. Each meal has been worse than the one before. This is our Daily Journal for Round America Day 96 - July 5, 2003. Click here for more information |

We spent a leisurely day in Anchorage before flying back to Seattle. This is our Daily Journal for Round America Day 97 - July 6, 2003. Click here for more information |

We drove halfway across Washington state today -- heading back east. Today was a big day for pie. First, we had Cherry Pie in the cafe made famous in the TV series, Twin Peaks. Then we followed up with Apple Pie in Wenatchee, the apple capital of the world and the home of the world's largest apple pie. This is our Daily Journal for Round America Day 101 - July 10, 2003. Very few people would look at the three photos at the top of this page on our web site and guess that we spent the day in Washington state. Central and eastern Washington state along Highway 2 don't look anything like what I expected -- NOTHING like western Washington. While there were apple trees and cheery trees and your regular run-of-the-mill roadside and forest trees, there were also many miles of wheat fields without a tree in sight. There were even areas that looked like desert. This is our Daily Journal for Round America Day 102 - July 11, 2003. Click here for more information |

Spokane, Washington. We decided to spend a leisurely day here today and complete the catch-up work on the web site photos. Spokane is a lovely town, and it seems like an especially nice place to live and raise a family. This is our Daily Journal for Round America Day 103 - July 12, 2003. Click here for more information |

It was a pretty drive from Spokane Washington, across Idaho, and 120 miles into Montana. Mountain driving in Idaho and Montana, but the roads thus far are situated in valleys, so the driving hasn't been at all tense. This is our Daily Journal for Round America Day 104 - July 13, 2003. Glacier National Park is absolutely breathtaking. Bozzie Jane and I vote it best scenery so far. It's hard to imagine that we will find a place that's any prettier...but we know better than to say that at this point as we continue to find a variety of things that we feel are EVEN better than something great that passed before. This is our Daily Journal for Round America Day 105 - July 14, 2003. Click here for more information |

We saw Zurich, Malta, Dunkirk, and Glasgow today. These are all towns in Montana -- named by the Northern Pacific Railroad as part of a program to attract immigrants to the area back in the late 1800's. We drove from Havre -- in the middle of Montana -- all across the eastern half of the state on Highway 2. There isn't a lot to see, but we enjoyed the drive. This is our Daily Journal for Round America Day 106 - July 15, 2003. Click here for more information |

It's funny how things happen. We were pretty much in the middle of nowhere this morning as we drove down the amazing Enchanted Highway and saw the World's Largest Metal Sculptures produced by artist Gary Greff. The car started making a funny humming noise. Within a mile, we were coasting. Transmission problem. This is our Daily Journal for Round America Day 107 - July 16, 2003. Not the most exciting of days. We did get good news from Rob that the replacement transmission had come in. If all goes well, the car will be ready today. This is our Daily Journal for Round America Day 108 - July 17, 2003. Click here for more information |

The Cruiser was ready late yesterday. New transmission. $2,100, but no charge to us as the car was under warranty. We picked it up from Rob at Charbonneau Car Center, said hi to Nick, Casey, and Mitch, and we hit the road. This is our Daily Journal for Round America Day 109 - July 18, 2003. Are you familiar with the art work of Gutzon Borglum? Korczak Ziolkowski? Dr. Harley Niblack? We spent most of the day visiting their studios and seeing their work. We also met Ruth Ziolkowski; she has been pursuing her husband's art work since he died in 1982. This is our Daily Journal for Round America Day 110 - July 19, 2003. Click here for more information |

We began today with a few sights in Rapid City, South Dakota -- sculptures of various Presidents downtown; a fabulous chapel; Storybook Island -- a wonderful free park for children; and Dinosaur Park. We also visited the Berlin Wall Memorial Park in Rapid City where they were having a huge religious event of some type. This is our Daily Journal for Round America Day 111 - July 20, 2003. In 1953, our family moved to Duluth, Minnesota. We stayed for just a few months and then moved to Texarkana, Arkansas/Texas. My Dad says there was snow on the ground when we moved to Duluth, and the snowman we built in our front yard in November was still there when he went back in April for the closing on the sale of our home. It's a really cold place during the winter, but Duluth is a surprisingly nice place with great people. This is our Daily Journal for Round America Day 115 - July 24, 2003. Today was one of the most boring days we've had. We were both tired today. I'm sure we could have made the day more enjoyable if we had worked harder at it. The fatigue factor is certainly having an impact at this point. This is our Daily Journal for Round America Day 116 - July 25, 2003. Click here for more information |
