Hidalgo is home of the world's largest killer bee.

The statue was created because Hidalgo was the city where the Africanized "Killer Bees" were first discovered in the US.

The statue is 10 feet high and 20 feet long, and as statues go, this is a nice one.

The first Africanized honeybees were discovered in the US near Hidalgo on October 15, 1990.

Mayor John Franz seized the opportunity to put this small town of 4,000 on the map, and he named Hidalgo the "Killer Bee Capital of the World."

Mayor Franz raised $20,000 to build the statue. The statue was unveiled on December 6, 1992.

The statue has received extensive media coverage - Oprah Winfrey, Wall Street Journal, American Airlines magazine, and more.
