Leopold's Ice Cream Shop - Savannah Georgia

Leopold's Ice Cream Shop is owned by film producer Stratton Leopold ("The Sum of All Fears," "The General's Daughter," "Paycheck").

Originally opened in 1919 by Stratton's dad and two uncles, the shop quickly became the place to be in Savannah.

All the ice cream is made in the shop from the original recepies of 1919.

The walls are covered with pictures, posters, and props from films Stratton Leopold and Academy Award nominated Production Designer, Dan Lamino (shop manager), worked on over the years.

Leopold's ice cream is outstanding! We recommend the Tutti-Frutti ice cream. The song Tutti Frutti was written by Johnny Mercer of Savannah, who loved the Tutti-Frutti ice cream at Leopold's.

History of Leopold's Ice Cream Shop:

The delicious Savannah tradition that is Leopold's Ice Cream began back in 1919....when Peter Leopold, along with his brothers George and Basil, founded Leopold's Ice Cream at the corner of Gwinnett and Habersham Streets. Peter had been taught the art of making home made super-premium ice cream and developed proprietary recipes for this delicious treat.

Many lasting memories were made at Leopold?s between 1920 and 1970 since it was THE gathering place for all of Savannah, including famed lyricist Johnny Mercer, who grew up a block away. Leopold's signature flavor, Tutti-Frutti was often shipped all over the United States. After George and Peter passed away, Peter's son Stratton ran the Gwinnett Street store.

A chapter in Leopold's history was closed when Stratton left Savannah to pursue a career producing motion pictures. But Savannah never forgot the great ice cream and Stratton was often asked when he would reopen.

On the 18th of August 2004, the dream came true! Leopold's Ice Cream opened at a new location, 212 East Broughton Street, with the original, secret ice cream recipes. Designed by Academy Award-nominated designer Dan Lomino, Leopold's is once again an ice cream parlor circa 1935. Much of the decor is original including the original soda fountain, soda fountain cover, back bar, sundae holders, banana split boats, and the malted milk dispenser. Even the old Philco radio and the wooden, interior phone booth from the old store are being used!

But there's also a dash of Hollywood -- thanks to owner Stratton Leopold, a successful film studio executive and producer. Signed posters, signed movie star photos, props, memorabilia and equipment from hit films are all on display inside the ice cream parlor.

And Stratton is even luring Hollywood stars themselves to come for a cone or a scoop! It's not surprising since Stratton has worked with many of the bold-faced names we all recognize from film credits and gossip columns.
